New Municipal Tourist Tax in São Miguel for 2025

According to the announcement of the local authorities, starting from January 1, 2025, every visitor of São Miguel-the largest island of the Azores archipelago-will be charged a municipal tourist tax. This decision is made in light of broader actions aiming at enhancing sustainable tourism, with the intention of assisting in the realization of environmental conservation projects all over the island. It will apply to overnight stays to ensure that the region's emerging tourist industry benefits from the stay of visitors both directly and indirectly.

What is the New Tourist Tax?

The tourist tax will be €2 per day for overnight stays in hotels, guesthouses, and other forms of accommodation in six municipalities of São Miguel. Guests will be charged up to three consecutive nights per stay maximum. To be exempt from paying this tax include all children under the age of 16 and those who are going for health reasons.

Municipalities Covered

The following six municipalities in São Miguel will be affected by the tax:

  • Ponta Delgada
  • Ribeira Grande
  • Lagoa
  • Vila Franca do Campo
  • Povoação
  • Nordeste

Destination of the Proceeds - Purpose of the Tax

The product of the tax will serve to fund the following:

  • Environmental Projects: Maintenance and financing of projects for the conservation of natural parks and protected areas.
  • Infrastructure Improvements: Improvement of public premises and tourist infrastructures.
  • Community Programs: Community events, cultural activities, and campaigns that support responsible tourism.

Local authorities estimate the new tax will bring in about €10 million in revenue in 2025 alone, direct funds for the island's sustainability.

How Does It Affect Visitors?

The small additional expense, however, will be minimal in the larger context of trip expenses for most travelers. Rather, the tax is a great step in the right direction toward conservation of São Miguel's unique ecosystems and cultural heritage. Visitors can feel confident that their contribution will go directly to support sustainability on the island.

Traveler Tips

  • Plan Ahead: Be in the know about the tax while budgeting for your trip.
  • Support Local: Support accommodations and tours that are in line with the island's sustainability goals.
  • Engage Responsibly: Participate in activities that respect local customs and the natural environment.
